Barry Schwartz and Tomer Honen from Google - QA Session SMX 2012

Question – What’s most important in my site’s ranking?

Answer – Quality traffic is preferred over clicks
Question – How can I improve my website’s ranking?

Answer – Improve the quality of your service by talking to your users. Have the content answer the user’s needs. Use common user sense and you’ll be fine.

In the near future:

– Having images copyrighted

– Search by image

Question – I’ve made a change to my website and it has been down ranked. What do I do?

Answer – Don’t do anything. Substantial changes to a website (such as moving a header to the bottom of a page) will probably lower the site’s ranking in the short term, but in the long run the site will regain its former ranking.

Question – What does Google do against “spam bullets” meant to bring a site’s ranking down?

Answer – Spam links don’t count (after Panda) in Google’s ranking. There is no negative impact on a site’s ranking. There will probably be a quick drop in ranking, and then the site will regain its former ranking.

Question – Does Google’s algorithm deals with different locals differently?

Answer – No, its one algorithm that deals with different sectors.

Question – Does Google recommend a static or dynamic URL?

Answer – Google recommends giving static websites a static URL, and dynamic ones a dynamic URL.

Question – Does Google+ plans to introduce the alerts feature like on Facebook?

Answer – Some of Facebook content will appear on Google+ and some won’t (couldn’t answer).
Question – What is over marketing?

Answer – Contributing with relevant and meaningful information is the most important thing for your forum. Participate in as many discussions relevant to your site’s content or sector as possible (including social networks)
